Guest Guide

Everything you need to know during your stay

Welcome to Studio Olive

Studio Olive began as a jewellery workshop and slowly grew into something more.

Today it is a shared home for travellers, creatives, surfers, remote workers, and curious people passing through Sri Lanka's south coast. The house is over 150 years old, surrounded by gardens, and just a short ride from the beach, but feels a world away from the bustle of town.

Whether you're here for a few nights or a few months, we hope you settle in, meet good people, discover something new, and leave feeling a little more connected than when you arrived.

Everything you need for your stay can be found in this guide.

Welcome home.

The Dogs

Studio Olive is home to two resident Toy Poodles called Peggy Lee and Uncle Basil. They are friendly, and very much part of daily life around the house.

Please avoid allowing the dogs into your room. If they discover they are welcome, they may decide to move in permanently.

Please Help Keep the Dogs Safe

Please keep all exterior doors closed behind you. For the barn doors, simply closing the bottom half is enough.

The dogs may act tough , but they're really just babies with very little street sense and absolutely no survival skills.

Thank you for helping keep them safe.

House Rules

We don't have a whole lot of rules.

Studio Olive is a shared home for travellers, creatives, surfers, remote workers, and generally like-minded people. Most guests find that common sense and consideration go a long way towards making the house enjoyable for everyone.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Please be respectful of fellow guests, staff, neighbours, and shared spaces.
  • Visitors are welcome during reasonable hours.
  • Occasional overnight guests are fine, however please let us know beforehand if someone will be staying overnight so we know who is on the property.
  • If an additional person is staying regularly or effectively becomes a second guest in the room, additional accommodation charges may apply.
  • Please do not host large gatherings, parties, or events without prior permission.
  • Smoking is permitted in Courtyard and outdoor areas only.
  • Please clean up after yourself in shared spaces and leave things as you found them. Including washing your dishes after use, ready for the next person.
  • Keep noise to a reasonable level, particularly early in the morning and late at night.
  • Please lock your room when leaving and take reasonable care of your belongings.
  • Guests are responsible for any loss, damage, missing items, or excessive cleaning resulting from their actions or the actions of their visitors.

Above all, help us create a comfortable, welcoming environment for everyone staying here. If you're unsure about something, just ask.

Kitchen Guide

The kitchen is here to be used.

Whether you're making a quick coffee, cooking dinner, or preparing a feast for new friends you've met at the house, please make yourself at home.

A few simple things help keep the kitchen enjoyable for everyone:

  • Wash and put away dishes after use.
  • Wipe benches if you've made a mess.
  • Clean pots, pans, and cooking utensils promptly.
  • Please don't leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight.
  • Return shared items to where you found them.
  • Label food if you're staying for an extended period.

Filtered drinking water is available in the kitchen and is safe to drink.

The fridge is shared by all guests. Please be mindful of space and avoid storing food long after you've left.

The fridge is a shared space, but the food isn't. Please avoid using food, drinks, or ingredients that belong to other guests unless invited.

Enjoy it, make yourself at home, and leave it ready for the next person.

Coffee Machine Guide

The kitchen is equipped with a Sunbeam espresso machine for guests who appreciate starting the day properly.

Making an Espresso

  1. Ensure the machine is switched on.
  2. Check that there is water in the tank.
  3. Place ground coffee into the portafilter (the black-handled basket).
  4. Gently level the coffee and tamp firmly.
  5. Insert the portafilter into the machine and turn it to the right until it locks into place. Follow the arrows marked "Insert" and "Secure Firmly".
  6. Place your cup underneath the spout.
  7. Press the espresso button on the top of the machine.
  8. When you have enough coffee, press the button again to stop the extraction.

Steaming Milk

  1. Fill a milk jug no more than halfway.
  2. Place the steam wand just below the surface of the milk.
  3. Turn the steam control knob.
  4. Once finished, turn the steam off before removing the jug.
  5. Wipe the steam wand immediately after use.

Please Note

  • The steam wand and metal parts become extremely hot.
  • If you've never used an espresso machine before, feel free to ask for help.
  • Please rinse the portafilter after use.
  • Empty excess coffee grounds into the bin.
  • Wipe down the machine if you've made a mess.

You can find a demo online here

Good coffee is a shared resource. Please leave the machine ready for the next person.

Laundry

The house runs on a solar and battery backup system, which means most of the time you'll barely notice when the power goes out.

Like much of Ahangama, we occasionally experience power outages and power surges, particularly during the low season.

If the power goes out while staff are on site, we'll usually sort it out straight away.

If no one is around, don't panic. The solution is often very simple.

Head to the solar system and fuse box area. On the far right side of the fuse box you'll find a switch labelled:

G = Grid
S = Solar

If there is a power issue, simply flick the switch down to S (Solar) and power should return.

If you're unsure, or if that doesn't solve the issue, please give us a call. There's usually someone nearby who can help.

Power Backup

In case of power cuts, the backup generator will activate automatically within 30 seconds.
